Meet the Members

For this months Meet the Member feature, we’re thrilled to be featuring a talented photographer in the Sea to Sky: Hannah Fergusson!

Tell us a little about yourself, Hannah!

Hi! I’m Hannah Fergusson. I’m Scottish-Spanish and moved to Whistler about three years ago, though I’ve been living in Canada for almost five years now, and settled here in the Sea to Sky area. I initially came for skiing, but now I’m even more into surfing and mountain biking. I got my first DSLR camera after a mishap with my old camera during a study abroad year in Uruguay, and that’s when I really started loving photography.

Why did you decide to start your photography business? How did it transition from a hobby to a business?

It all started last summer in 2023 when a friend asked me to photograph one of his events. I took some photos, shot a little video, and the positive feedback made me realize this could actually become my job. Photographing and filming Whistler nights was a fun way to connect with friends and enjoy myself, even though I’m not big on going out. Videography got me started, but I’ve since decided to focus more on photography.

What is the biggest challenge you find with operating your business?

Balancing the creative side with the business side definitely has been the biggest challenge. Photography is so much more than just taking photos – there’s planning, editing, and marketing involved, as well as running the admin side of things. Pricing my work has also been tough; finding the right balance between value and affordability is a learning process.

What is the greatest reward of operating your business?

The best part is seeing clients genuinely happy with their photos and actually using them, whether it’s for their business or just to capture something meaningful. I’m really grateful they trust me to capture what matters to them.

How has your business evolved since opening?
It’s definitely grown! I’ve expanded my portfolio by trying out different types of photography, from branding and working with models to family portraits. I’ve also branched out into website development and social media management, which has been a fun new direction.

What is your favourite part about working with the local community?
I love the connections I get to make! Working with locals makes me feel like part of the community, especially in such a transient area. Meeting other small business owners and seeing what they’re building is really inspiring.

Any last words about your business?
Honestly, I’m just happy to be doing what I love – whether it’s capturing a moment or helping someone bring their ideas to life. For me, it’s all about creating something together.

Reach out to Hannah if you’re in need of some family photos this holiday season, or some new high resolution photos for your website!
